Did you imagine that the world was made for you? Now you must know that in the works, in the orders and in my operations, except very few, I have never had man's happiness or unhappiness as my purpose. [...] And finally, even if I happened to extinguish all your specie, I would not notice.
From 'Dialogo della Natura e di un islandese' – Operette Morali – Giacomo Leopardi
The days without numbers passed by between the end of February and the beginning of May 2020. Milan was never completely deserted: rarefied presences like mirages without identity seemed to materialize at street corners or sitting on benches; from the shy and mostly gagged attitude, it was sometimes impossible to understand if they were real entities or if they belonged to the projection of my memories, before everything happened. In any case, it was enough to distract your gaze for a moment to no longer see anyone.
All that was left was the city and the reverberation of sounds that hadn't belonged to it for some time:
the echo of the beat of wings,
of the fountain water
and whiffle of wind.
